In Japanese, karate means "empty hands". Another nominal development is the addition of dō (道:どう) to the end of the word karate. Thus karatedō is more than just empty hand techniques. It is "The Way of the Empty Hand". Karate is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Islands in what is now Okinawa, Japan. It developed from the indigenous martial arts of Ryukyu Islands. The martial arts movies of the 1960s and 1970s served to greatly increase the popularity of martial arts around the world, and in English the word karate began to be used in a generic way to refer to all striking-based Oriental martial arts.
Our website is a great area to start exposing yourself to Karate but going to your local Karate School is where you should start training properly. Please note that the website serves as only a reference guide for practitioners with experience. Please go see a certified Master Instructor for training.
Yes, anyone can practice Karate. Karate as a martial art is popular with people of both genders and of many ages.
To be good at Karate takes years of practicing the skills repeatedly and regularly to improve one's proficiency. Asking advice from senior belts can help improve your techniques and correct your mistakes. I also believe that you have to enjoy and love the sport to be able to reach a new level. Please see a certified Master Instructor for training.
The practice and mastery of kihon is essential to all advanced training, and includes the practice of correct body form and breathing, while practicing basics such as stances, punches, kicks, blocks, and thrusts, but it also includes basic representative kata. Kihon is not only practicing of techniques, it is also the karateka fostering the correct spirit and attitude at all times. They are considered fundamental to mastery and improvement of all movements of greater complexity.
It varies between schools. Please note receiving a black belt doesn't mean you've mastered the martial arts, its only the beginning and that's when the true training begins!
Usually there is a free class that you can participate and tryout if you ask the Master Instructor. If not, you can watch from the side and observe the training and see how the students practice.
It varies between schools. Some of the costs expected when starting include monthly fees and the uniform. Later you may need to purchase sparring gear to participate in advanced training.
